You're halfway down a seam, everything feels fine, and then you turn the fabric over. Underneath is a nest of loose loops that looks nothing like the neat stitching on top. Or the seam has pulled itself into a wavy ripple that no amount of pressing will flatten.
Almost everyone reaches for the tension dial at this point. Almost everyone shouldn't — at least not first.
Thread tension is the most misunderstood setting on a sewing machine, and it takes the blame for a long list of problems it didn't cause. Here's what it actually does, how to read your stitches to find the real fault, and the order to work through when something goes wrong.
Every stitch your machine makes is two threads locking together. The top thread comes down from the spool, through a set of tension discs, and down through the needle. The bobbin thread comes up from underneath, held by a spring in the bobbin case.
Tension is simply how hard each of those threads is being held back as it feeds. The dial on the front of your machine (usually numbered 0–9, with 4 as the default) tightens or loosens the grip of the top tension discs. A higher number means a tighter hold.
When the two are balanced, the threads lock in the middle of the fabric layers. You see only top thread on top and only bobbin thread underneath. When they're out of balance, whichever thread is looser gets pulled through to the other side.
That single principle is all you need to diagnose most problems.
Sew a test seam on a doubled scrap of the actual fabric you're using — not a bit of calico, the real thing. Use a different colour in the bobbin from the top thread. It feels fussy, but it makes the fault obvious in seconds.

The first row catches out more sewists than anything else. A bird's nest underneath looks like a bobbin problem because that's where you can see it, but it's the top thread that has escaped its tension discs and is feeding freely.
Work through these in order. In our experience on the repair bench at the Chester showroom, the vast majority of "tension problems" are solved before you get to number six.
1. Rethread the machine with the presser foot up. This is the single most useful thing in this article. The tension discs are only open when the presser foot is raised. Thread with the foot down and the thread lies beside the discs rather than between them — so it has no tension at all. Lift the foot, unthread completely, and thread again from the spool.
2. Change the needle. A needle blunts after six to eight hours of sewing, and a blunt or bent needle causes puckering, skipped stitches and thread breakage that all look like tension faults. Check the size suits the fabric too — an 80/12 struggling through denim will pucker every time.
3. Check the bobbin. Is it wound evenly, without loose or crossed threads? Is it the correct bobbin for your machine — not a near-identical one from a different brand? Is it sitting the right way round in the case? Most drop-in bobbins should feed anticlockwise, but check your manual. A bobbin that's the wrong height or class will never give consistent tension, so it's worth keeping genuine bobbins for your machine.
4. Clean out the lint. Fluff compacts in the tension discs and under the bobbin case, and it changes how firmly the thread is gripped. Remove the needle plate, take out the bobbin case, and brush it out. Run a folded strip of fabric or a length of unwaxed dental floss up and down between the tension discs to lift trapped fibres. Do this every few projects, not every few years.
5. Look at your thread. Old, cheap or fibrous thread sheds badly and drags unevenly through the discs. If a spool has been in a drawer since the 1990s, it has almost certainly gone brittle. Use the same weight and type in the bobbin as on top for ordinary seams — a fine bobbin thread under a heavy topstitching thread will never balance. 6. Check how the spool sits. Cross-wound spools (where the thread crosses diagonally) prefer a vertical pin; stacked spools prefer horizontal. The wrong orientation makes the thread jerk as it unwinds, which reads as intermittent tension. A thread net over the spool sorts out slippery rayons and metallics.
If you've genuinely worked through all six and the stitch is still unbalanced, now you adjust.
That last point matters more than people expect. Tension is not a single correct setting; it's specific to the fabric, thread and needle in front of you. Fine silk, four layers of denim and stretch jersey all want something different, and a machine that's perfect on cotton poplin may need a touch more on velvet.
Most modern machines are set at the factory so that the bobbin rarely needs touching, and many manufacturers would rather you didn't. Adjust the top tension first, always.
If you do need to, there's a small screw on the side of the bobbin case that controls the spring. Turn it a quarter turn at a time — clockwise to tighten, anticlockwise to loosen — and count your turns so you can put it back.
For a front-loading bobbin case, the traditional check is the drop test: thread the bobbin into the case, hold the thread tail, and let the case hang. It should stay put, then slip down an inch or two when you give the thread a gentle jerk. If it drops like a stone the tension is too loose; if it won't move at all it's too tight.
If you regularly sew with specialist threads, buy a second bobbin case, adjust that one, and keep your original untouched for everyday sewing. It's a cheap solution to a recurring annoyance — have a look in machine accessories for your model.
Overlockers are a different beast, with three or four tensions interacting at once. The same diagnostic logic applies, but change one dial at a time and keep a note.
Why does my sewing machine keep making loops underneath?
Nine times out of ten the top thread isn't seated in the tension discs. Raise the presser foot, unthread completely, and rethread from the spool with the foot still up.
What number should my thread tension be on?
Around 4 is the default on most machines and suits ordinary woven cottons. Anything from 2 to 6 can be correct depending on fabric, thread and needle — the balanced stitch matters, not the number.
Does the tension dial affect the bobbin thread?
No. The dial only controls the top thread. Bobbin tension is set by the spring on the bobbin case.
Why is my fabric puckering even though the stitches look even?
Usually tension that's slightly too tight for a lightweight fabric, combined with too long a stitch or a needle that's too big. Try a shorter stitch, a finer needle and a slightly lower tension.
How often should I have my machine serviced?
Roughly once a year for regular use. Persistent tension problems that survive everything above often turn out to be a burr in the thread path or a worn tension assembly — both workshop jobs.
Thread tension is a balance, not a setting. Read the stitch first, rethread with the presser foot up, change the needle, clean out the lint, and check your thread and bobbin. Only then reach for the dial — half a number at a time, testing as you go.
