The Great British Sewing Bee 2026 is Back! Our Round-Up of Episode 1

Grab your pins and put the kettle on — The Great British Sewing Bee returned to our screens on Tuesday 14th July, and if the opening episode is anything to go by, series twelve is going to be an absolute treat. Here at Jaycott's, it's our favourite time of the sewing year, so we settled in to watch the new batch of home sewers take their first nervous steps into that famous sewing room.

A new face at the front

The biggest talking point before a single stitch was sewn? A brand-new host. Comedian and BAFTA winner Sophie Willan takes over presenting duties from Sara Pascoe, and she slotted straight into the warm, encouraging role the show is loved for. Reassuringly, our beloved judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant are back in their usual spots — ready with their expert eyes, their honest critiques, and the occasional raised eyebrow at a wonky seam.

British Summertime Week

The series kicked off with a gloriously seasonal theme: British Summertime. Twelve new sewers — nine women and three men, aged from 27 to 64 and hailing from all corners of the country — faced three challenges designed to test their nerve on day one.

First up was the Pattern Challenge: a pair of summer shorts complete with patch pockets, a faux fly and contrast topstitching, all to be finished in two hours and 45 minutes. Fiddly fly fronts and fabric choices caught a few sewers out, proving that even a "simple" pair of shorts can hide plenty of technical traps.

Next came the ever-unpredictable Transformation Challenge, where the sewers were handed humble barbecue aprons and given just 90 minutes to reinvent them as functional bags. It's always our favourite round — nothing shows off a sewer's creativity and quick thinking quite like turning one thing into something completely different.

Finally, the marathon Made-to-Measure Challenge gave the contestants five hours to create an outfit for their perfect summer's day. And in a Sewing Bee first, the sewers modelled their own finished garments on the catwalk rather than fitting them to professional models — a lovely change that made those final reveals feel even more personal (and nerve-wracking!).

Star of the week

It was a flying start for Anna, who impressed the judges enough to take top honours in the opening week, winning both the Pattern and Transformation Challenges. A brilliant debut and definitely one to watch as the competition heats up.

Sadly, as ever, one sewer had to leave the room at the end of the episode, we won't let on who this was in case you haven't seen it yet — a bittersweet moment that's part and parcel of the Sewing Bee, delivered with all the grace and good humour the show is known for.
